KCB appoints KPL winning Matano new head coach

Kenya Commercial Bank Football Club, referred to as KCB FC, have appointed veteran coach Robert Matano as their new first team boss as they move on from a lukewarm 2024/25 season.
The well travelled and astute Matano has arrived back in the country following a spell in Tanzania where he took charge of Singida based outfit Fountain Gate FC.
Matano is a Kenyan Premier League coaching legend, having won the KPL title on four occasions, back in 2009 with Sofapaka and thrice with Tusker FC in 2012, 2021 and 2022 seasons.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony at KCB bank headquarters at KENCOM House, Nairobi, KCB FC patron Azu Ogolla said that the agreement to bring in the experienced Matano is a momentous move for the club ahead of the 2025'26 season.
“Today marks a significant milestone for KCB Football Club.
"In Matano, we welcome a highly accomplished coach with an outstanding track record, proven leadership, and a winning mentality. His wealth of experience and championship pedigree make him the ideal candidate to guide the team into a new era of success, he said during the unveiling ceremony.
Matano, who is known for his no nonsense approach and tactical management, was happy to sign with a club that has potential such as KCB.
“I am honoured to be joining KCB FC. This is a club with immense potential, a strong backing, and a clear vision for the future. I am here to win, to compete, and to build a team that reflects the strength and ambition of the KCB brand,” he said.
The bankers sacked Patrick Odhiambo as their head coach following a campaign which saw them finish ninth on the log in the KPL, with 42 points, 23 behind winners Kenya Police who collected 65 points.
John Njogu will assist Matano as senior team trainer.
